Scripture Challenge ~ Week #26
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23.
Have you seen the movie "Groundhog's Day"?
The other day I was driving to work as I do every day. And I came to the realization that we are all living that movie.
Bill Murray is a TV news reporter. He arrives in Punxsutawney to film the groundhog either see his shadow or not on Groundhog's Day. The problem is that when he wakes up the next morning, he relives the same day over again and again. He struggles with this, obviously, and tries every different strategy he can think of to deal with it. Until one morning he realizes that maybe he's supposed to learn how to handle himself better, make the most of his day, to be kinder, to become less selfish, and love even more.
Here's my connection: each day we are given a gift. Many days it feels as if I get up and do the same thing over every single day. And it brought me to this: Why we are here on this earth? Every single one of us?
Answer: God gives us the day to use to the best of our ability, to love God, and love our neighbor. And the neatest thing is that each day is new. With a fresh start, grace, and forgiveness. When we mess up and don't do so well one day, we get the next day all over again to make it better. God gives us grace after grace. Then I realized that every morning I wake up. God is giving me another chance to do it over again, this day better than the last. And even if I mess up today, I get a clean slate the next day. It made me realize that each day truly is a blessing and a gift from God. I can now wake up realizing that today God wants the very best for me and I can start to live a little differently. How can I love God today and how can I love my neighbor? And how can I love today better than I did yesterday. And even when I mess up today, the best thing is that if I wake up tomorrow God is giving me another chance to do it again. He loves me and He's my biggest fan. He knows I can't do it alone. His strength sustains me and He is with me through all of it.
God gives us the gift of the present to become a better version of ourselves and to build a stronger relationship with him. Otherwise our life would be a monotony of getting up every day & doing the same thing over again and again without much reason or hope.
Great news for me. Every single day I mess up. Whether I yell at my kids or get frustrated with them, show impatience in my job, don't love my husband as much as I can or just plain doubt, the next morning I wake up, I can either think, "It's time to make the donuts," or this is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad that we are alive and God loves us so much, he's willing to give us a do over.
God bless you this week and every week as you find the do overs more meaningful and the grace to get through the challenges as well as the gifts.
Another verse to add:
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.” Psalm 143:8 (NIV)
